World Cup

I thought it might be interesting for you to get to know some of the main vocabulary for the Worldcup so I made a list of terms which I selected from trusted sites of translation. The source of my research is below the list. I hope you like it and also that with this list you can be able to try listening to some English broadcasts of the World Cup and recognize the studied vocabulary.

Eliminatórias                                           QUALIFYING

England thrash Moldova but there are defeats for Wales and Northern Ireland in the opening round of World Cup qualifying matches. (BBC)

Inglaterra goleia Moldávia, mas País de Gales e Irlanda do Norte perdem na rodada de abertura das eliminatórias para a Copa do Mundo.

Cabeça-de-chave                             SEED, SEEDED TEAM, SEEDED SIDE

Hodgson would be delighted to face his former country [Switzerland] instead of Germany, Spain or one of the four seeded sides from South America. (The Guardian)

Hodgson adoraria enfrentar a seleção que ele dirigiu [Suíça] em vez da Alemanha, Espanha ou qualquer um dos quatro cabeças-de-chave sul-americanos.

Teams will be split into four pots and drawn in eight groups. POT 1 (Seeds): Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Colombia, and Uruguay. (The Independent)

As equipes serão divididas em quatro potes e sorteadas em oito grupos. POTE 1 (Cabeças-de-chave): Brasil, Espanha, Argentina, Alemanha, Suíça, Bélgica, Colômbia e Uruguai.

Oitavas, oitavas-de-final                  ROUND OF 16, THE LAST 16

The qualifiers from England’s group will play those from Group C – either Colombia, Greece, Ivory Coast or Japan – in the round of 16. (The Daily Mirror)

As seleções que se classificarem no grupo da Inglaterra enfrentam nas oitavas as do Grupo C – Colômbia, Grécia, Costa do Marfim ou Japão.

Quartas, quartas-de-final                QUARTER-FINALS, ROUND OF 8, THE LAST 8

Mexico - Tournament best: Quarter-finals 1970, 1986 (The Telegraph)

México – Melhor campanha: Quartas-de-final em 1970 e 1986

A bit more: Pentacampeão
Brazil – Five-times World Champions
Brazil – Five-time winner of World Cup
Brazil wins World Cup for fifth time (uma manchete de jornal, por exemplo).

“decisão por pênaltis”       penalty shootout/shoot-outpenalty kicks, penalties

A abreviação PK / PKs (penalty kicks) é usada nas estatísticas dos jogos e pode também aparecer em textos corridos.
Se aparecer ao lado do placar do jogo, podemos usar a abreviação pens, assim:
Paraguay 0×0 Japan (5-3 pens).

IPA - International Phonetic Alphabet and learn the Alphabet

To communicate well in English the learner should pay attention to the differences in sounds between his mother tongue and English. The study of pronunciation is usually divided in two parts: segmental aspects (individual sounds) and supra-segmental aspects (rhythm, intonation, stress). Let's begin with the segmental aspects practicing individual sounds  and observing the main challenges for the Brazilian student. Here is a list of just some of the consonantal challenges:
the production of the "th" sounds (voiceless and voiced) - /θ/ and /ð/
the production of /r/ and /h/
the production of /p/ /t/ /d/ /m/ /l/

Click on the link below to practice the sounds of English!

Competencies

Competencies are vital to personal and social success in all fields of our lives, this way it wouldn't be different with learning languages. In order to learn a new idiom the learner must develop some core competencies. These are the sets of intellectual, personal, and social and emotional proficiencies that all students need to develop in order to engage in deeper learning. One of the core competencies to be developed by a learner of a second language is the communication competency, which encompasses the set of abilities that students use to impart and exchange information, experiences and ideas when exploring the world around them. Many language programs choose to focus on communicative skills at first once it is the bridge between students' learning, their personal and social identity and relationships, and the world in which they interact. Next time we will discuss a bit on communicative skills, see you then!

Do we have a deal?

Learning is about commitment, a growing strategic commitment to seeing one's own progress - instructor and learner. Given the growing strategic importance of online learning, the intent is to convert wishes into action, to engage learners in interactive classes and help them to overcome possible limitations making use of the most suitable technology available. For this we have to make a deal, to agree on a learning plan free of resistance. You can count on me, let's live the good emotion of learning a new idiom !!

Beowulf

As I promised last class, here you have the address for Beowulf hypertext - you find the
old and modern English versions, as well as a summary of each excerpt plus notes on the
glossary, enjoy yourselves!! (copy and paste)

http://www.humanities.mcmaster.ca/~beowulf/main.html

Beowulf is the name of the main character in the anonymous epic poem
'Beowulf', a poem from the Anglo-Saxon mythology. The name possibly
means "bee-wolf" or "bee-hunter"  (a kenning for bear) from Old
English beo - "bee" and wulf "wolf".
