IPA - International Phonetic Alphabet and learn the Alphabet

To communicate well in English the learner should pay attention to the differences in sounds between his mother tongue and English. The study of pronunciation is usually divided in two parts: segmental aspects (individual sounds) and supra-segmental aspects (rhythm, intonation, stress). Let's begin with the segmental aspects practicing individual sounds  and observing the main challenges for the Brazilian student. Here is a list of just some of the consonantal challenges:
the production of the "th" sounds (voiceless and voiced) - /θ/ and /ð/
the production of /r/ and /h/
the production of /p/ /t/ /d/ /m/ /l/

Competencies

Competencies are vital to personal and social success in all fields of our lives, this way it wouldn't be different with learning languages. In order to learn a new idiom the learner must develop some core competencies. These are the sets of intellectual, personal, and social and emotional proficiencies that all students need to develop in order to engage in deeper learning. One of the core competencies to be developed by a learner of a second language is the communication competency, which encompasses the set of abilities that students use to impart and exchange information, experiences and ideas when exploring the world around them. Many language programs choose to focus on communicative skills at first once it is the bridge between students' learning, their personal and social identity and relationships, and the world in which they interact. Next time we will discuss a bit on communicative skills, see you then!

Do we have a deal?

Learning is about commitment, a growing strategic commitment to seeing one's own progress - instructor and learner. Given the growing strategic importance of online learning, the intent is to convert wishes into action, to engage learners in interactive classes and help them to overcome possible limitations making use of the most suitable technology available. For this we have to make a deal, to agree on a learning plan free of resistance. You can count on me, let's live the good emotion of learning a new idiom !!

Beowulf

As I promised last class, here you have the address for Beowulf hypertext - you find the
old and modern English versions, as well as a summary of each excerpt plus notes on the

Beowulf is the name of the main character in the anonymous epic poem
'Beowulf', a poem from the Anglo-Saxon mythology. The name possibly
means "bee-wolf" or "bee-hunter"  (a kenning for bear) from Old
English beo - "bee" and wulf "wolf".
